Dr Saji D’Souza , Ayurvedic physician, On treatments available in Ayurveda
How is Ayurveda different from the other systems of medicine?
Ayurveda is an ancient science of treatment with its roots in our Vedas and has been around for centuries. It is a system of natural medicine with absolutely no side-effects because 90 per cent of the medicines are herbal preparations.Health is not merely an absence of disease, but also the well-being of the body, mind and soul. This is the concept of health that Ayurveda puts into practice.
Does it not call for stringent abstinence measures?
There is a misconception that pathya is necessary for the success of Ayurvedic treatment. Dos and don’ts are for ailments and not for medicine. There are certain diseases that only get complicated with the consumption of some fruits and vegetables. Hence, we advise certain restrictions during treatment. For that matter, even allopathic practitioners advise some abstinence during treatment. For example, if you are suffering from cold, the doctor advises you not to go for a cold shower.
What are the cures available at your centre?

There is a belief that Ayurvedic treatment is time consuming and costly. Is it true?
The duration of the treatment depends on the severity of the disease and the age of the patient, like in any other system of medicine.
Even the treatment is economical, it ranges from Rs 200 to Rs 1,750 per day sitting at my centre, depending on the duration and the method of treatment. My father, A B D’Souza, to whom I credit all my success, always says that a doctor should be a good human being first. Therefore, we offer discounts to the physically and mentally challenged, defence and police personnel and teachers.
